Plain Porridge Must Have Scallop

A conversation took place between Yining and me over the weekend. I told her Mummy has prepared porridge for her lunch. She asked what porridge was it and I told her it was plain porridge. Guess what she asked me?

"Plain porridge? No scallop?"

Think we have been feeding her too much good stuff.

Yining's Year End Concert @ CGH Auditorium

Yining participated in her first Year End Concert from childcare she’s attending. She’s performing in the Nursery One Strawberry segment as a drummer.

CGH Childcare Year End Concert

We have seen a lot of kids in the past who are either frozen when they get on stage or starts crying. We were prepared to see such jitters from Yining. She’s only 3+ coming to 4, so we thought it’s inevitable when they are put in front of such a big crowd.

So, here comes the performance! We held our breath…...

And to our surprise, no jitters! In fact all the kids are doing extreme well! Well done!

I guess kids these days are different in confidence level and every batch get better than the previous.

After the concert, we went around taking pictures with her classmates and friends. We rarely get to see the kids all dressed up so we had to take pictures. :) This will also be Yining’s memories when she grows up. During our time, all we had was the ‘graduation photo’ with our classmates.

This is the cute trumpeter you see in the video.

She took pictures with her teachers too.

It was an interesting event. Something interesting for the kids to remember and have fun at the same time. :)

Naughty Girl - In Yining's Words

I'm not sure what language is this, but I guess it's Eastern European side. Yining has been watching this video lately. She says the little girl in the video is very naughty. And really, if you watch the video, the little girl gets into all kinds of trouble. :)

This is an opportunity to teach Yining as well, so I watched the videos with her and explained to her why the antics of the 'naughty girl' are not acceptable.

It's pretty entertaining actually. :)

Our Taiwan Holiday - Day 4 : 淡水老街

In the last post, we went to Leo Foo theme park where Yining had a lot of fun. We left the park and took a 2 hour drive back to the hotel at Taipei, 淡水. I chose this hotel called Park City Hotel, which is 1 train stop away from 淡水老街. Convenience is the utmost consideration when travelling with Yining.

Food was the first thing we looked for at 淡水. And on the recommendation of my guide, we went to this very traditional stall selling 阿给.

And I think you can see how tasty the food is judging by how much Yining's enjoying her meal.

阿给 is actually something like our Yong Tau Foo. The locals says it's very nice, but I thought it was just normal. The bee hoon and fishball were very good though!

After our meal, we went for some shopping. Went to this shop to buy ginger tea.

The rest was just shopping. We walked around for about 2 plus hours only because it was Yining's bedtime very soon.

Our Taiwan Holiday - Day 4 : 六福村主题游乐园 Leo Foo Theme Park

Day Number 4 of our vacation in Taiwan. We are leaving 清境 to return to 台北 (Taipei). The original itinerary was to visit 日月潭. (Sun Moon Lake) before returning to Taipei. However it was raining that morning, so I had a quick discussion with our guide 小胖 to adjust the itinerary. We decided to give Sun Moon Lake a miss and head back to Taipei directly. But along the way, we will stop over at 六福村主题游乐园 (Leo Foo Theme Park) in 新竹 (Hsinchu).

Mummy and Yining At Leo Foo Theme Park

Yining and Daddy at Leofoo Theme Park

Leo Foo Theme Park has 4 theme parks and a zoo. The admission was approximately 50 SGD per adult. Yining goes in for free. And ALL rides are included in the admission. We arrived at the theme park at 11am. Our guide said he will pick up at 5pm. I was doubtful. Kept telling him we will probably leave at 4pm or earlier. Well, I was wrong.

I think it's because we were there on a weekday. There was no crowd. In the morning there were some school excursions, but towards the end of the day, the whole theme park was virtually empty. Which is good for us because we didn't have to queue for anything. :)

Friendly Reminder

At the admission, I was given this slip to help me filter out all the rides that Yining can take. Convenient and thoughtful!

We started off at the Arabian Palace and did the milder stuff first - Carousel.

Yining On The Carousel

Then we went to feed the horses. Yining was less apprehensive now, after having experience with the sheep feeding.

There was this animal called alpaca. Interesting. We don't even see it in the Singapore Zoo.

This is Yining on the horse chariot, without the horse.

And now the 'horse'. She went 3 round on this.

The big alligator or crocodile. Yining wouldn't put her head in there.

And Father and Daughter on the ride that took us around part of zoo. Of course I was the only 1 pedalling.

Then we went to the Safari, where we took a bus into the wild animal enclosure. Inside there, we are caged up, not the animals. And here we caught an interesting scene of the tiger munching grass.

And a lazy tiger.

We took a mini train ride after the bus ride and got up close with some of the animals.

Up Close With Giraffe

Yining was like all excited throughout. Somehow, while the zoo there is not as beautiful as our Singapore Zoo, the experience is different. We were 'closer' to the animals.

And after that we went back to the theme park and tried things more exciting. There's this ride we thought was mild. It looked like Viking thing we had when we were younger, so I thought, why not. Let's let Yining try it. And we were caught in surprise when the thing started spinning.

Yining was abit worried at first, then when she got the hang of it, she went wild.

Look at how apprehensive Yining was initially. And in the next video, she's totally enjoying it. After the first ride, the operator asked if we wanted to go another round. Yining answered immediately. And here we go again!

We went for some other rides after that and we ended the day with a mild ride for Yining.

Milder Ride

By the time we left the theme park, it was already 5pm. We spent a good 6 hours at the theme park. My guide was good. He totally knew we would be enjoying the theme park. No wonder he set the pick up time at 5.

Leaving Leo Foo

We took another 1 over hour drive to our hotel in 淡水 to check in. Of course that's not the end of the day yet. I will leave the rest to the next update.

Well Done. :)

Our Taiwan Holiday - Part 2 of Day 3

We are now at Part 2 of Day 3 on 7th May 2013.

As I'm writing this post, I'm also watching the news flash on Taiwan earthquake. The same place where we went to, was hit with several earthquakes. The strongest quake was of magnitude 6.3 on the Richter scale. I was actually worried that we would encounter the earthquake when we were there, especially when we were driving up to the mountains, rather paranoid.

Anyway, let's continue with Part 2 of Day 3.

After walking down the flight of stairs, we had our lunch at 纸箱王. The unique thing about this place is that everything there is made of paper!

The windmill behind Yining, is also made of paper. Of course it's specially treated to be waterproof. The food containers and the benches we set on are all made of paper too!

Paper king merchandize

Together in 纸箱王, is the merchandise shop, where they sell the benches that we sat on, the lamps etc. All made of paper. And Yining upon seeing the rocking, wasted no time hopping onto it. :)

One of the interesting things we bought at 纸箱王 is this handicraft where we have to DIY to weave it.

Yining's Horoscope

Took abit of effort to 'weave' it though.

And our next destination, 清境小瑞士花园. This place sit right beside 纸箱王. Why they call it 小瑞士? Because it's modelled like Switzerland or Europe.

It was drizzling a little and Yining wanted to carry her own umbrella. It was oversized, so it looked a umbrella moving around on it's own.

It was raining, so I didn't take much pictures. Wouldn't look nice anyway. We just did the usual, 'been here, done that' stuff. :P And compared to the places we visited in the morning, this place really pales in comparison.

After 清境小瑞士花园, we discuss with the guide, either to call it a day or to proceed to the hot spring. I was apprehensive again on the hot spring part because we have to drive down the mountain and drive up another one. The motion sickness thing still spooks me. In the end, we still decided to go ahead. Fortunately, no incident not the way, because Yining slept through the whole journey. She must be really tired after having so much fun for the whole day. In fact on the way back, Yining knocked out too. :)

Our guide brought us to this place where we can get a private room for family.

From this point onwards, no pictures. All censored. :) It was a great soak, after walking around for the whole day. We walked around the area after the spring and bought some local products. After which, off we headed back to our lodging to have a rest to get ready for Day 4!

Priceless Moments

While Yining was getting off the car this morning, she realised that Mummy didn't bring her bag along. She got anxious and told Mummy that she left her bag behind. I told her Mummy didn't need her bag yet and Yining said : "我怕妈妈没有带bag,不可以上班."

Moments like this are priceless.

Our Taiwan Holiday - Part 1 of Day 3

*WARNING* : Make sure you have a high speed internet access because I'm going fill this whole blog post with TONS of pictures! :)
7th May 2013 - Our 3rd day in Taiwan.
Day 2 was eventful. I won't say disastrous, but it was quite an experience. Come Day 3. Our itinerary for the day is as follows
1. Take a 40 mins drive up the mountain to one of the peaks (武岭) at 3275m above sea level.
2. Go to 青青草原 and 清境牧场 to visit the sheep farm.
3. Visit 小瑞士花园.
4. End the day at 庐州温泉.

I woke up in the morning and looked out of the window. It was already very bright. We were supposed to meet the driver at 9am. The first thought was, have we overslept?! Checked the time, 5:30am. Stepped out of the cottage to take a picture. Yes, it's 5:30am in the morning.

5.30am at Shangrila Hanging Gardens
Yining has the habit of waking up early, so she woke up shortly as well. The sun and temperature was great, so we went out to take some pictures. I think the temperature was about 20 degree celsius?

Early in the morning
Yining collage
I think Yining had a good night sleep. She loves cool temperature and sleeps very well when it's cool. The weather was bright and sunny but very cooling, really fantastic compared to the previous day when it was cold, dark and wet.

We went on to have our breakfast andwaited for our guide to pick us up for our first destination. While waiting, we took pictures.

The home stay
Yining was in a really good mood for taking photos.
Yining mummy daddy collage
Shortly after our guide came and we move out to the first destination. But before we moved off, I actually had a short discussion with my guide to decide whether to skip the first destination. Why? Because it was a 40mins drive up and mountains and I was terribly worried that the vomiting episode would repeat. We eventually decided to go ahead, but we will monitor the situation along the way to make sure Yining was comfortable.

At this point in the video, we are about 2500m above sea level. It was actually not too comfortable because part of the motion sickness set in, maybe because of the anxiety that Yining might be uncomfortable. But when we finally made it to the peak at 3275m, the discomfortable disappeared immediately.
The scenery at the peak was breathtaking. The pictures probably do not do enough justice to the actual scenery. The temperature was at about 11 degree celsius. It was very amusing when Yining got off the car. At first she was very elated with the cold temperature, then suddenly she realised that it was really cold and quickly ran to Mummy and me for warmth. Because the air is thin, we had to keep reminding Yining not to run about. Mummy, who isn't really a fan of nature was also overwhelmed by the scenery.
Highest Point at 武岭
Yining and Mummy at 武岭
We spent a good half an hour or so before our guide told us we had to leave because mist was forming up. He was worried that if it got too thick, we might have problems going down the mountain, so no choice, we had to move on.
The next destination we are going to, is halfway down the mountain. The place is called 清境牧场 and 青青草原, which is an open concept farm with sheep roaming around freely. That's supposedly the highlight of the tour for Day 3, because Yining has been nagging about going to feed the sheep even before we departed for Taiwan. :)
And so, we took about 30mins drive or so downhill to the farm and here we are. This was what greeted the moment we stepped into the farm.
Sheep roaming
The sheep there are very intelligent. The moment I got near the vending machine to buy the food for feeding them, they started crowding around me. I had to quickly walk away and divert their attention. There's no way Yining could feed the sheep if the whole lot crowded around her. So I had to walk around and hunt for loners. And we found one.
Yining feeding sheep
Yining was a little apprehensive at first, but she got the hang of it very quickly. The only problem is that, in between feed, the sheep got very anxious and kept going for Yining's hand. It was an amusing moment because Yining was shouting at the sheep saying : "Wait! Wait! Why you cannot wait! Naughty 羊羊!" Her tone was exactly the way we told her off when she gets impatient. Now we use that as her reminder when she gets impatient. :)
The farm was huge! So we spent quite a bit of time walking around feeding sheep and enjoying the sun under the nice cool weather. After which, we took a walk to 青青草原,which is adjacent to the farm. But in between, we took a short break at the local market.
Yining with ice cream
Yining had this ice-cream with frozen sheep milk in the middle. Very tasty!
Next stop at 青青草原 was another unforgettable place.
The grassland and the sky
Beautiful Hill and Sky
Beautiful sky and weather. Any picture taken there is naturally beautiful. I don't even need much skill for taking the pictures. We took loads of pictures there.
Yining and Mummy posing with the egg rolls we bought.
Posing again
Family Shot
Our family shot. Not sure what Yining was looking at. :P
Yining with windmill
Yining was voluntarily taking a lot of pictures. Guess she like the scenery too. :)
Yining With Mummy
Very nice backdrop. Too bad Yining was looking elsewhere.
Daddy doing the gyiyomi
Doing the Gyiyomi, on request of Yining. Not very me, but my girl wants it. What to do? :)
We spent more than 3 hours total at 青青草原 and 清境牧场. Just these 2 place is already worth the trip driving up and down the mountain. But at the end, there's a little surprise.
Long flight of stairs
487 Steps Down
We had to take this long flight of stairs down the hill. 487 steps. Sweat!
We still have 2 more destinations to go before we end the day, so I will leave that to Part 2 of Day 3!
