Christmas 2011

Last Christmas, Yining was barely one. Not really knowing what's going on, but amazed by the Christmas lights.

And this Christmas, she's almost 2. Walking and wandering on her own, still as fascinated by the glittering lights.

Twins?! No way! Blood pressure already gets very high with one. :P It's just Yining having fun playing with her own reflection in the mirror.

Yining has always had this fascination with mirror since she was very very little, I think about 3 months. A little vain pot she is. :)

Con Job!

The Con Job: How to con Yining into not fighting with us for the sweet drinks at MacDonalds?

Get one of these cups and pour plain water inside.

MacDonalds XS Cup

And there you are! Yining even said: "Wahhhhhhh…cold cold ahhhhh…..!!!" It's just plain water really. :P She just wants to be drinking from the Macdonalds cup like everyone else. Doesn't matter whether it's Coke or whatever.

Picnic With Yining At Botanic Gardens

We were at Botanic Gardens last Saturday with Chris and Karen. This is Yining's first time there. As usual, she's excited because of the new environment and the ample space for her to run about. We reached the place at abut 8.30am and stay for about 3 hours. Usually we will pack and leave for home before 10am, but the weather was great on that day, we could stay longer and let Yining run around more.

So, as usual, she gets all excited, runs about, gets tired and this is the result.

Tired Yining

Tired Yining

As much as possible, Mummy and I would bring Yining out to experience nature on weekend mornings. During the weekdays, she spends most of her time indoor. Ever since Yining can walk on her own, we have brought her to various parks.

The next place that I'm have been contemplating bringing her to is the treetop walks at MacRitchie and HortPark. But before that I got to hunt for a backpack carrier so that I can carry her on my back when she's tired. She's not going to last walking a few kilometers with me. :) Hope I can get a good one soon and we can go for our next adventure! :)

Act Cool!

Cool ya?? Candid shot actually. :) She was throwing a tantrum. >:

Morning Walk, The One Before Changi Point

After hearing from my colleagues that the Punggol Park Connector is extended all the way to the Punggol jetty, I decided to bring Yining for a walk.

There are 3 stages to our morning walk.

Stage 1:

Yining is very enthusiastic, she wants to walk on her on own. Don't want to hold hands.

Stage 2:

She want 抱抱. Too tired after walking on her own. Refuse to come down to walk.

Stage 3:

Knock out totally. Favorite part for Mummy and me. :P She will sleep in the car and an hour or 2 more when we reach home. We figured this is the best way to expend her energy and get her to sleep, so we are going to do this more often. :P

For those who are interested in visiting the place. This is the map.

Morning Walk @ Changi Point

Mummy and I are on leave for a couple days. It's great to be out on a weekday while everyone else is at work, particularly when you have to bring a kid with you. Crowded places is a major no-no when we want to bring Yining out.

This morning, we went to Changi Point for a walk after having breakfast at Changi Village Food Centre.

The weather is fantastic today. The skies are blue and the morning at 9 is still suitable for toddler skin. And being a weekday, there are no cyclists and skaters etc, so we can let Yining walk on her own without much worries. Some park users are plain selfish and reckless disregarding the safety of children. That's a separate issue though.

So here's snapshot of our walk this morning. Enjoy!

This could be a classic shot but I couldn't get the camera in time.

There's this painting work going on for my block and the workers are working outside on the gondola. Guess what the rascal did. She stood at the window to harass the workers. But of course the sliding windows were all shut and I think they couldn't hear her.

Yining's Graduation!

Yining has graduated from the Wiggles and Giggles unit from her Kindermusik class!

Last Saturday, Yining attended her last lesson for this unit and there was a graduation ceremony for the children. It was quite amusing. Yining's barely 21 months and she is already attending graduation ceremony.

Here's the video for the moment.

Yining joined this class on the 4th session of this unit. There are in 15 lessons in total and this is 1 of the 4 units in the 'Our Time' curriculum.

The main objective when we enrolled Yining into this class, was to let her interact with other children of her age. We just wanted her to have fun. Along the way, we saw visible improvements in certain aspects. Her speech ability improved after 3 or 4 sessions. Through the coordinated singing and dancing, she became conditioned to perform certain actions in reaction to music and keywords. And of course, she had a lot of fun.

We will be enrolling Yining for the next unit, which is Fiddle-dee-dee. More information on the curriculum here.

Yining at Bishan Park Macdonald's

Brought Yining to Macdonald's at Bishan Park today. Didn't take pictures of the place, but it's quite disappointing. Being in a park, I expect facilities for children to play, but there are none. The place is quite small so seats are limited. It's a good place to laze on a weekday afternoon though. I expect low patronage on weekdays.

Anyway for Yining, she enjoyed her food, or rather the ketchup. She uses fries as her dipstick to dip into the ketchup then lap up all the ketchup until the fries is wet and soggy. Then she will change another piece of fries since she can't get any ketchup with the soggy piece.

Yining Has Cravings Too!

Out of the blue, Yining kept asking for 'Tuckieee, Tuckieeee' and she keep sucking her fingers. For some reason she recognizes Kentucky (KFC) and she sucks her finger when she starts asking for 'Tuckieee, Tuckieeee'. We have never brought her to KFC nor ate KFC with her, so my guess is that she learnt about it from TV advertisement. (The evil television).

On the way back home just now, she started asking for it again and started crying. So, to satisfy this very weird craving, we brought her to KFC and bought Snacker set to satisfy her. A KFC, she recognizes the logo and everything. Amazing. (The evil television again).

In the end, her "craving" was satisfied with a few pieces of french fries. :) Mummy and I ate all the rest.

I wonder what's the next thing she's going to ask for.

Yining, fresh out from the shower. The rascal is always wet and sticky from perspiration. Sometimes we need to bathe her a few more times on a hotter day.

Yining enjoys showering, probably like most kids do. They like to play with water a lot. Very often the shower will end with her screaming, refusing to get out of the bathroom. :) But as usual, she's easily distracted. Get her something else to catch her interest and out she goes of the bathroom. The recent trick to wrap her in a towel and she will walk out of the bathroom willingly, masquerading her new outfit. :)

Cat Terrorist!

Yining love cats since she was a baby. She gets very excited when there's a cat in her sight. Her daily routine is to look for our neighborhood cats when she reaches the void deck. Then she will start her terrorizing of the cats.

Yining's Going To School!

For the past 1 month, Yining has been attending Kindermusik lessons. They have classes for children starting from new born to 7 years, with different curriculum for different age groups.

Yining was about 17 months when we brought her to the first trial lesson, so she still falls within the 0-18mths category. They call this 'The Village'. She was the eldest kid in the class. Personally I felt she's quite out of place. So on the advice of the teacher, we brought her for another trial class for 18 months to 3 years. Now she ends up being the youngest. :) This older class is call "Our Time". The main activity for them is singing, dancing etc, basically just playing. Yining enjoyed this class more, so we had her enrolled formally for the class.

Initially, we were quite worried that Yining might disrupt the class because she couldn't focus and kept moving around the classroom. Teacher Angel saw our worries and told us that it's normal for children to misbehave especially when Yining's not even 18 months. And it was also alright for her not to be focused. It will take about 3 or 4 lessons for them to settle down and start to engage more with the rest of the class.

True enough, after 4 lessons, we could see that Yining's starting blend into the group. The class uses music as a cue for certain actions and this works well for us at home too. She does certain things when we play certain songs. Another thing we discovered was that her speech ability improved as well. The most important is that Yining's enjoying this weekly session. That's already bang for the buck. :)

Yining @ Pasir Ris Park

I read that kids these days get short-sighted because they spend too much time indoor. And to make things worse, they either watch TV all the time, or are glued to gadgets like PSP/iPhone/iPad. I can't imagine Yining wearing glasses at 2, so I try to make it a point to bring her outdoors every weekend.

2 weeks back, we brought Yining to Pasir Ris Park. She walking steadily now, so we decided to let her roam and explore on her own.

She also tried more 'dangerous' stunts like climbing up this higher slide with other kids. Kids learn from each other very quickly. When they see another one of them doing something, they imitate, so there she goes when she saw other kids going up the tall slide.

She also likes the swing.

Yining at Hay Goat Farm

Brought Yining to the Hay Goat Farm yesterday. We wanted to let her see the live goats and also try goat milk. Goat milk is nutritious for children and adult alike. Turned out, Yining did not like the milk very much. But it's a first try. She might like it after a few more tries.

Yining was pretty fascinated by the goats, especially when the young kids were going 'meh meh meh' all the way. It has been my intention to exposure Yining to nature all these while. Children these days do not get close to nature. Most are stuck to the TV or other electronic gadgets. Goat farm is stop number 1. It's doesn't really qualify as nature actually. We will carry to explore places soon, like Bukit Timah Hill, the boardwalks at MacRitchie Reservoir etc. soon. :)

Safe Haven

Was trying to get Yining to walk barefooted on the beach but she was afraid of stepping on the sand. :)
She ended up clinging on to me all the way. She knows it's safe haven in Daddy and Mummy's arms.

The Concept Of Fear

I was reading a friend's blog post about his son being afraid of his own shadow, so I decided to write about the concept of fear in children and how I deal with this with Yining.

First of all, how do children know what to fear? My theory is: They dont! The concept of fear must have been introduced by 3rd parties like, parent, caregivers, companions etc.

Yining is 15 months now. From very young age, I have been trying not to introduce fear to her. For example, when there's thunder, I will tell her it's 雷公公 or I never used darkness to frighten her when she walks into the unlit bedrooms at night. As a result, she's not afraid of trying new things. She might be apprehensive, but she's never rejecting. Of course, there is a catch to this. This little rascal is now never afraid to explore, but I don't think it's a disadvantage. This definitely beats the opposite behaviour.

I think this is important in life when Yining grows up. Alot of us grew up in traditional Asian families when we are always apprehensive and less adventurous. We end up being confined, ironically by ourselves. It will take years to shed this mentality, that is if we manage to shed it.

Taking Yining For A Dip!

We have been thinking of bringing Yining for a swim since she was 9 months old. But we have been putting it off for various reasons until 2 weeks back.

Our little girl was a bit apprehensive when we tried to dip her into the water. We started by letting her walk knee deep in the water. And that was the only warm up she needed. Minutes later, she was happily kicking water in her float.

Today, we brought her for a dip again. This time round....no warm up needed. It's as if she wanted to jump right into the pool the moment we stepped into the swimming complex.

It's great to see that Yining's enjoying her swim. I'm going to try to make this a weekly event or at least once a month. Other than Yining enjoying, it's also good bonding time for us.

Yining's First Birthday!

It's an overdue post again, one out of the very many posts that I'm supposed to update for Feb. :)

Yining turns 1 this year. A small step in her life and an unbelievable year for Mummy and me. Looking back the photos that were taken when she just arrived, we actually wondered how we managed to get here today.
IMG 0178
After experiencing the joy when we see her laughing, the anxiety when she falls sick, the excitement when she mouthed her first words, we finally understand how our own parents felt when we gave them the same emotional roller coaster ride when we were still the tiny bit like Yining now.
Anyway, enough of the emotional stuff. :)
On week before Yining's actual birthday, we did the traditional Chinese customs rituals for 1 year old, like stepping on the Ang Ku Kueh, picking of items from a variety of things like pens, money, books supposedly to see her future.
That was the interesting part.  The first item she picked was money, then my credit card. Then a calculator and a pen. She picked all the good stuff. :)
We celebrated Yining's birthday which falls coincidentally on Chinese New Year Eve this year. I decided to keep the celebration within the family because I want this first birthday to be personal and close.
Mummy ordered a very nice custom-made birthday cake with very nice figurines from Oven Creations. The cakes they make are really beautiful, so much that we wanted to preserve all the figurines.
IMG 0198
IMG 0203
Introducing the actors here: The Cow! That's Yining, and therefore the largest of the figurines. Monkey's Mummy, Snake's me and Yining's favourite cat from the void deck. :P The bee....extra. :)
We also got Yining a huge Dora balloon, almost as big as her. No photos to show unfortunately. I can't remember why there's no photo, hmm...
This is a start of Yining's journey in life for many more years to come. Mummy and I will do our best make sure that Yining has a fantastic childhood and wonderful time growing up.

Roseola (薔薇疹) aka Fake Measles

We finally brought Yining home after 10 days after Mummy's MC. When we thought the H1N1 episode's over, something else cropped up.

The 2nd day after bringing her home, she started to have fever. Temperature went up as high as 39 degree. After prior experiences of her having fever, we are now less panicky. We gave her Paracetemol and did the sponging routine. Temperature eventually came down after 4 days.

But after the fever, another thing happened. She started to have rashes all over her body, no fever or other symptoms. We had to see the doctor right away. This is where we learnt another new ailment that babies tend to get i.e. Roseola (薔薇疹) aka Fake Measles.

Anyway doctor says this is not serious if the fever's over. The rashes will spread to the whole body and then disappear within the next 3 or 4 days. Great relieve for Mummy and me.

I won't going into the details of Rosela. In summary, it starts with a fever that lasts for 4-7 days, then after that the rashes starts appearing. It's commonly affecting children from 6 months to 2 years old. So, Mums and Dads, don't panic when you see such symptoms. Of course, going to the doctor is a must.

Life Without Yining

This is the 3rd day without Yining around. Mummy and I had flu symptoms on Monday. Both of us have been on MC since. We sent her over to 外婆 in case she catches the flu from us.

Today hospital called and confirm that Mummy has H1N1 and has to be quarantined until 12th Jan. For me, doc says it looks like a common flu but I have to be on MC until the 7th to be safe. That means we can't bring Yining home at least for this week.

Now our worry is Yining. Hopefully she didn't catch anything from us. The incubation period for H1N1 is one week. So by next Monday we will know if she's safe.
